Safety Classes
The first priority of the Guild is ensuring that members engage in woodworking SAFELY. The Safety Committee determines the type of safety training that is required and approves any class curriculums related to safety. The Education program provides the instructors for these classes and manages the scheduling of the classes. A member’s authorization to use certain types of equipment is called CERTIFICATION. Below is a diagram of the pathways to achieve certifications.

INTRODUCTION TO GUILD SAFETY: The path to most of the opportunities in the Guild begin with completion of this class will be the first class a new member takes. It is required of all members, regardless of expertise. Upon completion, a member has access to select classes; can join Guild community project teams; and can use the Bench Room. This class is required of all members regardless of expertise, and is a prerequisite for any classes that occur in Guild facilities. Children 10-18 can take this class, but may not take Getting Started or Core Tool certifications. |

BEGINNER SAFETY: For those just beginning their woodworking journey, the class Getting Started with Portable Power Tools teaches i the basic operation and safe use of portable power tools. True beginners are identified in the Introduction to Guild Safety Class. This is a required class for beginners that helps prepare them for the next step.
| CORE TOOL CERTIFICATION: This is a class on the safe operation of large woodworking equipment in the Guild Shop. For the machine room and for many of the Education classes, the member must be certified on the Core Tools (the bandsaws, table saws, drill presses, jointers, planers and sanders). To take this class, all registrants must have completed the Intro to Guild Safety class. The time for new members to complete Core Tool Certification is usually at least 60-90 days from the date of membership. Some very experienced woodworkers are permitted to take an expedited Fast Track version of this class. OTHER TOOL CERTIFICATIONS: Certification on other machine room tools are completed separately for each of the following tools: routers and table mounted routers; the sliding table saw; the wide belt sander; the pantorouter; and the multi-router. All require completion of core tool certification prior to class registration. |
CNC CERTIFICATION: In order to utilize the Guild CNC (Computer Numerical Control) equipment, the member must be CNC certified. This is certification is obtained by taking the Intro to Guild Safety Class and the Introduction to CNC Class. To be eligible for this class, the member must have completed Core Tool Certification. CARVING CERTIFICATION: Carving requires completion of the Intro to Guild Safety Class but not Core Tool Certification. For a member to take carving classes, the member must have completed the carving safety certification program. |
