Prerequisite: Intro to Guild Safety. Experience with basic hand planes
Responding to numerous member requests, the Guild is working to increase its intermediate-level classes.
Many members are familiar with the basic hand planes -- block plane, smoother and jack plane-- but have asked for help with the planes used for furniture joinery: mortise and tenon joints, lap joints and the like. We are developing a class in the use of plow planes, rabbet planes, shoulder planes and router planes, the hand tools you would typically use for making boxes, cabinets, bookcases, and tables. If you would like to be part of that effort, keep reading.
This session will focus on the best way to introduce four joinery planes to students who already have some experience with hand planes. We will not be fettling planes or sharpening blades - the goal is to see how we can effectively introduce these tools and give students confidence in their use in a four-hour class. This is an experiment that should help us create the class as a regular offering. Your input while we practice with you as participants, will be greatly appreciated.
