    Router and Router Table Skills

    Instructor - Bob O'Connor

    Note: Completion of the Safety & Orientation (S&O) meeting is required before taking this class.

    The router is one of the most versatile tools in the shop. It is commonly used to do routine cutting of slots with a straight bit, but has great flexibility in edge profiling and in use with jigs. The router is a simple motor 1, 2 ¼ or 3 ½ horsepower with a changeable collet that can hold thousands of bit styles. It can be mounted in a table for exquisite control or hand held when the project is too large to get onto the table.

    If you are not confident in your mastery of this machine, then this is the class for you. We will discuss best practice for each operation, you will see it demonstrated, and then you will have the opportunity to perform the procedure yourself, hands on. By the end of the class, you should feel comfortable that you can operate these machines safely. Materials will be provided.

    This class is designed to help you with Green Card Certification on these machines.
    A Shop Attendant needs to be an intermediate woodworker and is expected to work at least one shift a month, plus attend the monthly SA meeting.

    If a member needs a refresher on a certain group of machines, they can sit in on a class for free, provided they have previously taken the class.

    Instructor - Jim O'Rourke

    Note: Completion of the Safety & Orientation (S&O) meeting is required before taking this class.

    Two of the major tools in most shops are the Table Saw, used for ripping, crosscutting, and bevel cuts, and the Chop Saw, also used for crosscutting. If you feel that you are lacking in knowledge about these saws, then this class is for you.

The small class size will allow plenty of time to ask questions and provide individual attention. By the end of the class you will feel more comfortable in using this machine. Materials will be provided.

    This class is designed to help you with Green Card Certification on these machines.

    The Safety and Orientation is a no charge (free) class and is the first step toward earning your Guild Green Card and access to our power tool workshop. (The second required step is to complete all four of the Machine Skills classes OR take the comprehensive HOST test.)

    The purpose of this class is to familiarize you with the core power tools in the Guild’s workshop, and provide you with our safety criteria and procedures for using them. In this class you will view a video on safety, grade your written safety test (that you have completed prior to class), and review the Guild’s shop practices

    Prior to the Safety and Orientation meeting you must:

    1. Study the Tool Safety Manual on how to use the tools safely

    2 . Take the Tool Safety Exam with answers recorded on the Answer Sheet  You should have no trouble passing this test since it is open book and the answers are in the Tool safety manual

    In addition to the video and written test, we will also introduce you to all of the basic machines in the shop as well as what you have to demonstrate to pass the HOST (Hands On Safety Test)

    We will then discuss whether you are ready to take the HOST or if you need additional training. A self assessment form is available to help you decided. We will review of the training options that are available.

    You must bring these items to the meeting or you will be required to take this class again;

    1. The completed Tool Safety exam Answer Sheet

    2. The completed Self Assessment form

    Meeting Leader - TBD

    You must bring these items to the meeting or you will be required to take this class again;

    1. The completed Tool Safety exam Answer Sheet

    2. The completed Self Assessment form
